OIL RIG “HAIYANG SHIYOU 981”: CHINA’S CHESS MOVE AND CONSEQUENCES

The installation of the oil rig “Haiyang Shiyou - 981” by Chinese CNOOC inside the exclusive economic zone and on the continental shelf of Viet Nam since the beginning of May, 2014 has caused deep concern among the international community and ASEAN as it is posing a threat to international peace, security and stability in the East Sea. Why has China carried out those activities at the moment regardless of international law, the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea? Why does Viet Nam refrain from using military means in response? What are the political, legal, and economic consequences for the two countries? Which solutions to the conflict should be taken? These are the questions about which not only the Vietnamese people but many foreign friends are concerned. The article intended to contribute answers to these questions.
