Southeast Asia and the US Rebalance

In this paper, the authors’ first attempts to make the case that as part of the “rebalancing” strategy to the Asia-Pacific region, the US has paid better heed to Southeast Asia. Then, the paper outlines the ways in which the Obama Administration has demonstrated its shift in focus and finally, how this shift affects the foreign policies of countries in the region.

The US’s shift in strategic focus to the Asia-Pacific is rooted in the Obama Administration’s realistic assessment of the region and of Southeast Asia, in particular. The administration has been realloting more attention to Southeast Asia due to the region’s rising geostrategic importance, the shifts in relative power and expanding US interests. This change in the administration’s focus will significantly impact the region’s current and future security landscape. Looking forward, the Obama Administration is projected to continue to deepen its relations with various regional allies and partners as well as strengthen its presence in the regional multilateral efforts.

Thus, Southeast Asian countries must construct or reconstruct their foreign policies in a way that would allow them to flexibly take advantage of opportunities and effectively neutralize challenges borne out of the US’s new strategic adjustments.
