Possibility of Establishment of Regional Fisheries Management organisation in the East Sea

Cooperation on management and maritime resource protection is an important duty of member countries under the United Nations Convention of the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). In this regard, member countries shall endeavour, directly or through regional organizations, to reach agreement on necessary measures to ensure conservation and development of fish stocks. Establishing and participating in Regional Fisheries Management Organizations is one of the effective ways to fulfill the duty.

Currently, there are 38 Regional Fisheries Management Organizations (RFMOs), covering virtually all seas over the world. However, the East Sea has not been governed by any RFMO, given that its fish stocks have decreased sharply due to overfishing. At the same time, the overlapping of maritime claims in this region has caused many difficulties for fishermen in exercising their rights to undertake fishing activities in national and international seas. To address this issue, the establishment of a regional fisheries management organization in East Sea could be considered as a necessary and useful solution.
