Increase and Restoration of the National Border Marker System between Viet Nam and Laos

Implementing the 1977 Agreement on Border Demarkation, between 1978 and 1987, Viet Nam and Laos jointly accomplished the demarkation of the entire field border maker system, putting in place a total of 214 markers at 199 locations. This national borderline has been playing an important role in the joint border management. Nevertheless, this system of national border markers has revealed a number of shortcomings, failing to meet the needs of border management in the new context. Thus, with a view to upgrading quality of the borderline and constructing a new, professional and modern border marker system that is capable of meeting the needs of border management in the new context, top leaders of Viet Nam and Laos have, on the basis of continuity of the previous border demarkation, agreed to jointly formulate and implement the project “Increase and restoration of the national border markers between Viet Nam and Laos” and this is deemed as an important component of cooperation programme between the two countries to serve joint administration and long-term border protection. This article seeks to present (i) contents of the mentioned project, (ii) the actual status of increase and restoration of border markers, and (iii) significance of this project to both Viet Nam and Laos.
