The U.S Role in the Soft Security Mechanisms of Asia-Pacific.

Since the end of the cold war, the emerging security issues such as international terrorism, the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and natural disaster have challenged the existing security mechanisms in the Asia-Pacific region. Despite numerous efforts to improve their efficiency, it seems they remain inflexible and slow in responding to these threats. To compensate for their weaknesses, the United States have made some initiatives and put them into practice, for instance, Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI), Container Security Initiative (CSI) and Regional Maritime Security Initiative (RMSI). They differ from others in that they are U.S.-led and adhoc in nature. Besides, Six-Party Talk and Shangri-la dialogue in Singapore can also be considered "soft" security mechanisms, in which the United States play an important role. They have produced intitial achievements. They all are continuing to evolve in the future.
