ASEAN to Play the Role of a Peacemaker on the Korean Peninsula

The fast changing situation on the Korean peninsula, including outcomes of the Trump - Kim Summit in June 2018, the third inter-Korean Summit in September 2018 and positive achievements of the ASEAN Community, has recently created an opportunity for ASEAN to play the role as a peacemaker to accelerate related parties negotiating to end the Korean War that is, technically, still going on. South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean counterpart Kim Jong-un, in the recent Summit, declared an “era of no war” and vowed to eradicate all military threats on the Korean Peninsula and establish permanent peace. However, a formal peace treaty is not yet actualized. This paper argues that ASEAN can seize the opportunity only if its unity and willingness to play a more active role in pursuing peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula are enhanced.
