The Strategic Triangle Model: The Case of US-Sino-Russian Relations

This study tests Lowell Dittmer's strategic triangle theory with the US-Sino-Russian trilateral relationship, suggesting that although this is a useful analytical tools in explaining and predicting states’ behaviours, due to its structural and rational approach, its explanatory power is limited in many cases. Therefore, it is suggested that in order to understand or predict behaviours of countries in a trilateral relationship, besides the strategic triangle model, we need to take into account other variables such as domestic politics, external players, interdependence, and unexpected crisis.
