Impacts of the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP) on ASEAN’s Leading Role in the Process of Regional Cooperation in East Asia

Globalization and integration are two parallel development trends of the era in the context of the interdependence among countries are increasing. A variety of cooperation mechanisms on the basis of taking the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as center are concrete embodiments of regional integration in East Asian. Due to specific characteristics, ASEAN has played a leading role in the regional cooperation process more than 15 years. However, due to many factors, the key role of ASEAN in regional cooperation is increasingly reduced. In recent years, under the driving efforts of the United States, the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP) has been developed relatively fast and strong, and tends to overwhelm the existing economic cooperation framework which have been initiated by ASEAN in the region, thus becoming a new variable which is quite important for the leading role of ASEAN in regional cooperation in East Asia. This article mainly analyzes the impacts of TPP on the leading role of ASEAN in the process of regional cooperation in East Asia./.
