US RECENT ADJUSMENTS ON THE EAST SEA

  US Policy on the East Sea is based on the definition of its national interests in the region, which can be defined as freedom of navigation, maintaining region stability and its relations with strategic allies as well as economic interests.

   In the mid-1990s when tensions intensified in the East Sea due to China’s assertiveness, The US put forward its position on the East Sea: Remaining neutral in legal terms regarding territorial disputes. However, this position was still ambiguous, showing no strong position in face of the increasing tensions recently. However, with growing Chinese assertiveness and its intention to control the East Sea, the US has adjusted its policy on the region to defend its national interests. This paper analyses the factors contributing to these adjustments.
