Prospect of ASEAN 2025

At the 27th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in November 2015, Southeast Asian leaders proclaimed the establishment of the ASEAN Community and adopted the ASEAN Community Vision 2025, committing to furthering efforts to build an integrated, peaceful and stable community. The central question is to which stage ASEAN integration has progressed and whether the prospects for a strong and resilient ASEAN community is certain. From a theoretical perspective of regionalisation, ASEAN integration project is in the nascent phase and has scored little progress in substantive institutionalisation. In fact, ASEAN is facing tremendous challenges in term of deficit of political will and increased centrifugal force caused by push and pull of great powers. Such circumstances require ASEAN leaders to experiment more substantive integration initiatives to generate new momentums for upgrading ASEAN regionalisation.
