Engagement of some Countries in the Mekong Subregion via Subregional Cooperation Mechanisms and Issues for Vietnam

After the end of the Cold War, countries such as the U.S, Japan, China, South Korea and India have been increasing their engagement in the Mekong subregion to seek political influence and explore economic benefits. This article will investigate the purpose of such engagements as well as review this engagement progress in the Mekong subregion with the focus on subregional multilateral cooperation mechanisms established by these countries. Having analyzed the opportunities and challenges to Viet Nam in this context, the article will seek to identify several factors to be considered in the policy making process of Viet Nam's participation in these Mekong cooperation mechanisms.
