Opportunity in the Chinese Development Strategy

February, 2012 marks 40 years since the first visit to China of U.S. president Nixon, from 17 to 28, February, 1972. The two sides made the “Shanghai joint statement” on Taiwan and Viet Nam and on the normalization of U.S. - China relations with which the U.S. realized its goals in relation to the Soviet Union and in its dealing with the Viet Nam war and China was able to break the two-prong containment imposed on it by the U.S. and the Soviet Union, giving rise to the conciliation among the U.S., the Soviet Union and China in China’s favour both in the region and the world. At that time, no politician or international observer could have believed that China would be the second largest economy in the world in 40 years’ time and that the U.S. - China relations could shape the world developments in the 21st century. This paper analyzes the factors in Chinese thinking and in its strategy on reform, opening and modernization.
