The method of observation in international relations

Observation is the first task to be undertaken in scientific research. Scientific research is not simply looking but rather, it is a fully intellectual process that entails looking, listening and scrutinizing to collect and analyse data. By looking, you simply see scattered details whereas observation entails a more comprehensive process, ranging from collection and recognition of linkages among collected data to assessment, classification, compilation and eventually use of data. Observation is a historical method shaped at the end of the 19th century and gradually perfected ever since. For research of international relations in general and event analysis in particular, observation is an indispensible method.
